Multiple Injuries and One Fatality Reported in Multi-Vehicle Crash Near Kingston
A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred near the intersection of Glen Nevis Station Rd, resulting in one confirmed fatality and multiple injuries.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at approximately 4:05 pm, with police reporting that at least two others sustained critical injuries. Multiple others were treated for moderate and minor injuries.
A spokesperson for St John stated that 11 vehicles attended the scene, including nine ambulances, two operations managers, one rapid response unit, and one major incident support team. Seven helicopters also responded to the incident.
In total, 20 patients were treated, with two in critical condition, two with serious injuries, and multiple others with moderate and minor injuries.
The Fire and Emergency NZ units from Kingston, Frankton, and Queenstown responded to the incident, which has been labeled as a “heavy rescue” operation.
The Otago Southland Rescue Helicopter was also deployed to the scene.
The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) has closed the road north of Kingston, with closure points in place at Kingston township and Wye Creek. Motorists are advised to avoid the area, as no immediate detour is available.
The police serious crash unit is expected to attend the scene, and the road is likely to remain closed for several hours.
